Understanding Paralysis

The term “paralysis” refers to the loss of motor function and/or sensation in one or more areas of the body. Most people associate paralysis with the total loss of movement of the arms, legs, or all four limbs.

However, there are several different types of paralysis:

  • Hemiplegia: Hemiplegia is a form of paralysis in which the individual experiences loss of motor control and/or sensation in one arm and one leg on the same side of the body. A less-severe form of this injury is hemiparesis, which involves weakness without total paralysis.
  • Monoplegia: Monoplegia occurs when an individual experiences partial or total paralysis of a single limb, such as one arm or one leg. Traumatic monoplegia typically results from nerve damage associated with a spinal cord or brain injury.
  • Paraplegia: Occurs when both legs are paralyzed. Often, paraplegics also experience partial or total loss of motor function and/or sensation below the waist, including the lower abdomen and hips.
  • Triplegia: Refers to paralysis of three limbs, typically both legs and one arm. This type of paralysis most often results from an incomplete spinal cord injury, though it can also occur due to complications from a traumatic brain injury.
  • Quadriplegia/Tetraplegia: Formerly known as quadriplegia, tetraplegia refers to the paralysis of all four limbs (both legs and both arms), as well as the trunk. Tetraplegia is colloquially referred to as being paralyzed “from the neck down.”

In addition to the different types of paralysis, there are varying degrees of injury. In less severe cases, victims may retain some motor function, movement, and/or sensation. However, all individuals who experience partial or total paralysis will experience some degree of impairment.

The Long-Term Cost of Paralysis

Treating paralysis, as well as the underlying injuries that cause it, can be exorbitantly expensive. Depending on the nature of the injury, the victim may face tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical expenses every year. Over the course of their lifetime, the true cost of treating paralysis can easily exceed millions of dollars.

In addition to medical bills, victims may experience costs associated with in-home assistance and care, lost income or wages, loss of earning ability, home modifications, and other miscellaneous out-of-pocket expenses. And, of course, this is often nothing compared to the immense physical pain and emotional suffering they will endure due to their injuries.

At Scott J. Corwin, A Professional Law Corporation, we recognize just how devastating paralysis is, not only for the victim but for their families and loved ones, as well. Led by our Los Angeles paralysis attorney, we aggressively negotiate with insurance companies and other liable parties to secure maximum compensation for our clients. Our goal is to help you secure every penny you are owed so that you can move forward with your life.

In some cases, we may even be able to recover punitive damages. In contrast to compensatory damages, punitive damages are not intended to compensate victims for specific monetary losses or non-economic damages. Rather, they are solely designed to punish the at-fault party for egregious negligence, reckless endangerment, and/or willful or intentional misconduct. Though rare, punitive damages may be available in some cases, including claims involving drunk drivers, road rage incidents, and related accidents.
