As a motorcyclist, you are well aware that driving conditions can and will change as you make your way down the road. One second you are driving along smoothly, but the next you are stuck in city traffic.

While this is to be expected, you must make sure you are ready for anything that comes your way. For many, driving in traffic is much more difficult. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to improve your safety and help prevent being involved in an accident:

— Remain visible at all times. If you do nothing else, make sure you remain visible at all times, as this lessens the likelihood of being struck by another vehicle.

— Be cautious as you approach intersections. You may think that other vehicles see you and will follow the rules of the road, but this doesn’t always happen. Many accidents happen in intersections, so take extreme caution in these situations.

— Be on the lookout for bad drivers. Just because there is a lot of traffic doesn’t mean everyone is following the rules. There are always bad drivers out there, so make sure you know if they are around you.

These are just some of the many things motorcyclists can do to ride safely in traffic. If you are still involved in an accident, such as being struck by a vehicle, it’s important to stay put until medical help arrives. You don’t want to talk yourself into thinking it’s okay to leave the scene. Injuries from a motorcycle accident can be serious and require immediate attention.
