Californians and individuals across the United States have a lot of options available to them when they want to travel somewhere nowadays. Manufacturers have begun equipping their motor vehicles with technology to make them safer to remain competitive for consumers. Even still, a recent study published by Business Insider shows that some methods of transportation are still safer than others.

Business Insider researchers reviewed some of the latest data published by federal agencies such as the National Safety Council (NSC) and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). They did so to try to understand what’s the safest mode of transportation in the United States.

There weren’t any passengers who died on a commercial flight in 2017. There were 658 recreational boating and 831 railroad fatalities that year though. An astounding 37,133 people were killed in crashes on highways in 2017. That same year, pedestrian deaths were the highest that they’ve been in nearly 30 years.

The number of Americans fatally wounded while out riding their bikes in 2017 was 783. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notes that fewer bicyclists were killed that year than those riding any other nonmotorized vehicle.

Data published by the BTS, part of the United States Department of Transportation, shows that 5,172 motorcyclists died in crashes in 2017. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) data shows that most of the individuals who lost their lives in those crashes died after suffering severe head injuries. Their research shows that the use of helmets could have greatly reduced those individuals’ risks of getting hurt.

Technological advances such as air bags, blind-spot or parking monitors, enhanced cruise control and emergency braking systems have made passenger cars safer in recent years. Fewer improvements have been made to make bicyclists or motorcyclists feel as safe when out on the road with heavy and fast-moving cars.
