Motorcycle saddlebags are among the least remarkable accessories for these vehicles. Saddlebags perform approximately the same function as the trunk in a conventional sedan and are scarcely noticed. Yet a saddlebag became triggering force for a freak motorcycle accident near Sacramento.
The bizarre chain of events began when the motorcycle being ridden by a man from Modesto lost one of its saddlebags. The rider pulled over onto the center median with a view to retrieving the saddlebag, which came to rest in the inside lane close to the median strip. Before the rider could retrieve the saddlebag, a car struck it and its contents were spilled onto the highway. The motorcyclist decided to make another attempt to retrieve his possessions, and he walked into the traffic lane. Before he could reclaim the contents of the saddlebag, he was struck by a Toyota Corolla.
The man was still wearing his helmet as the impact carried him onto the hood of the Toyota, through the windshield, and into the passenger compartment. He struck the driver of the Toyota in the head and face. The Toyota was then struck from behind by a Mercedes GL450.
The motorcyclist and the driver of the Toyota suffered serious injuries, and both were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The Toyota driver succumbed to his injuries two days later. The condition of the motorcyclist has not been released.
Anyone who has lost a loved one or suffered injuries under similar circumstances may wish to investigate a wrongful death claim or a lawsuit seeking damages for medical expense, present and future lost income, and pain and suffering. The assistance of an attorney experienced in motorcycle accidents can provide a helpful analysis of the evidence and suggest legal arguments to support the claim.
